When Payments Meet Choice: How Gift Cards Are Becoming a Core Financial Product

Payments are evolving fast. Open banking, real-time data, and new reward mechanics are changing how consumers pay, save, and spend. Gift cards now sit at the center of this shift, moving beyond gifting into everyday, self-use payments.

This panel brings together fintech, retail, and industry leadership to explore how open banking data and cashback are driving real-time gift card usage, and why this matters for the future of payments.

Moderated by Tillo, the session will unpack how data-led cashback apps are using open banking insights to trigger gift card purchases at the right moment, how retailers benefit from this behavior, and what the rise of self-use means for the wider payments ecosystem.
Gift cards as a payment method, not a perk. Gift cards are increasingly used like cash, especially when digital top-up is enabled at major retailers such as Tesco.

  • Open banking data in action. How Cheddar uses open banking data to understand spending behavior and surface gift card offers at the point of highest relevance.

  • Cashback, instantly. Why gift cards enable instant cashback and better unit economics compared to traditional cashback models.

  • The rise of self-use. Insights from GCVA data on self-use as a dominant growth driver in the gift card market, and why payments and fintech leaders should care.

  • What this means for payments leaders. How fintechs, banks, and payment providers can use gift cards to increase engagement, reduce costs, and unlock new revenue streams.

The future of payment: Smart cards as the digital backbone of payments.

From plastic to pixels, smart cards are evolving into the digital backbone of modern payments and standalone digital payment devices.

Building on decades of leadership in the smart card market, Infineon is transforming cards into connected credentials that deliver cross-use solutions, such as tap-to-pay at checkout and tap-to-authenticate for secured identity flows. Furthermore, our solutions bridge the gap between traditional EMV payment systems, emerging digital currencies and crypto assets with improved resilience and enabling seamless interoperability and multi-application use cases. Through digitization and tokenization, connected credentials can live on phones, wearables, and other IoT devices, bringing trusted payments, secured authentication and seamless consumer acceptance everywhere.

In this presentation, we share insights on integrating innovative payment concepts based on Secure Elements with NFC, as well as wallet and tokenization services into the next generation of consumer payment devices. These include smart rings, smart watches, and smart wearables, delivering a seamless and secured payment experience integrating physical into digital payments only via a simple tap.
